After AVANGAR managed a win over Ninjas in Pyjamas we spoke to Alexey "Qikert" Golubev to hear about the team's rise to form, the addition of Bektiyar "fitch" Bahytov and role changes.

AVANGAR were set to play the EPICENTER 2018 Wild Card qualifier, but got promoted to the main event after MOUZ pulled out do to a player change.

The addition of fitch gave freshness and confidence to AVANGAR

However, the team from Kazakhstan has been on a tear recently, picking up wins online and qualifying for events, with their AWPer, Dzhami "Jame" Ali, boasting a 1.33 rating over the last three months.

Coming into this tournament you had a great record online, I think it was 47 maps won and only six losses, since fitch came in. What is the secret to the great form you are having?

After we brought fitch into our roster I think we became fresher. We were playing in the same roster for one year and it got us where it got us. We couldn't play like we played before and we had to change something, we had to pick up fitch and that is how it is. We didn't change anything in our game, I think he just added freshness to our atmosphere. That helps a lot, even here it helps. And we made Jame, our old in-game leader, take a carry role, now he can focus on his own game, he can get big numbers, shoot people, be in fragmovies and et cetera (laughs). But not me, I'm in-game leader now, I'm supposed to be the last one. But at least I am calling and we are winning games because of it, so I think it works.

Jame's form was really good at one point, at the Major, then after that he had a dip in performance, then again he was playing well... Is that fluctuation just down to the team or is there something about him individually as well?

I think that when you are the in-game leader, it is really hard to be individually good as well, consistent. So when I took this role, he suddenly became a super-carry, now he is just destroying everyone. I think it was all down to in-game leading, because he was in-game leading at the Major, at StarLadder—a few maps, we changed it at StarLadder. I used to in-game lead there but then Dastan said "No Alex, don't call, just shoot heads! Let Jame in-game lead". So I think it is all about in-game leading, it takes a lot of focus from you in-game, you can't be that consistent with this role. But now, everything is good.

What was the thinking coming into this event, you've been to New York, won a smaller event, played some online stuff and then came to EPICENTER, which is Big Event?

Yeah, in the past I used to say "We are here to win, we are here to destroy everyone", but after I would say these words, we always lost, I don't know (laughs). But now, I'm just saying that we are here and that firstly we have to go out of groups, we did that already, and our next aim is to win our next opponent, probably Team Liquid, we want to take revenge against them because they destroyed our plans two times already, at the ELEAGUE Major and StarLadder. I think it is going to be a good one, I think it is going to be a good game.

What happened in this NiP game, you won Overpass which wasn't expected, can you tell me a bit about that to start?

No, no, no, I expected Overpass (laughs), my whole team didn't believe that they would pick Overpass, but I expected it because a week ago I was sleeping and I had a dream that they picked Overpass (laughs). I already knew it, it was a vision of the future. So they did it and - we won it! I wouldn't say it was easy because they were playing really good, we couldn't do in the beginning, but then we got some lucky rounds and I think it was 6-9 in first half. And then we started to play as Terrorists it went really good, we did really good calls, everything went well, we had good communication, everything was ok. Even in practice games it doesn't go as good as it went in this map.

You managed to close it out on Dust2 after losing Cache. At the beginning of Dust2 it was going super good, it was 10-2 at one point, how did it go so great?

Dust2 was really our map, we believed that we have to win this game, it really became true when they won the knife round and they picked T side. We were shocked and were like "oh, easy game!". I mean, not easy game, but we were pretty confident in our CT side, I think we understand this map really good, rotations, stacks, mind games, it is pretty easy for our team so we were happy that they picked T side. We were leading 9-0, it was 10-5 for the CT half, it was like in practices, we are always winning CT sides in practices.

What are your thoughts for the rest of the tournament, what can you do here?

I think that we can still surprise everyone, I don't think it was a big surprise, we knew we can win and we knew we can just show ourselves again. But it is LAN, for us, LAN usually doesn't go so well. But with this roster it is really good because fitch adds extra confidence to our team, he is not old but he is a veteran of CS, while we are all 19-20. He gives us extra confidence.
